Collections Policy of the Saunders County Historical Society

The collections of the Saunders County Historical Society will reflect the lives of the people who lived in Saunders County. The collections will date from the prehistoric times to the time the county was formed, in 1856, to 20 years previous to the present year, with the exception of extraordinary circumstances.

The Saunders County Historical Society will maintain an active collections policy, i.e. continually collect objects. Anyone who wishes may donate items to the Society. The acquisition of objects may be done any one of the following ways: purchase by the Society, exchange, or donation.

The accessions committee shall be comprised of the Board of Directors of the Saunders County Historical Society. The Curator will research each object to determine its relationship to Saunders County’s history, how it might be used by the Historical Society, and whether we have similar objects already in the collection. These facts will be presented to the Board of Directors, which will accept or reject the donations.

Donated items should have been used in Saunders County by the people of this county, and items from outside the County will be considered if they are of significant importance to the County or the Society’s collections.

All donations are final and become the property of the Saunders County Historical Society. Donations will be accepted as outright gifts to the Historical Society without restrictions, real or inferred. It will be Mutually understood there will be no limiting conditions.

From time to time, and only as circumstances warrant doing so, the Historical Society will accept items on a loan basis for special exhibits. There will be a mutual understanding between the Historical Society and the loaners that said item or items will be returned to the owner as agreed when the loan was made.

The board will review circumstances for outgoing loans (involving items in the posession of the Historical Society to be loaned to outside entities) on an individual basis. Loans will be made only to recognized organizations, not individuals. Potential outgoing loans would be subject to review for suitability, including conditions or restructions.
